1 Kings 8

The dedication of the temple. (1-11): The Ark of the Covenant of God was a great symbol of God’s accompanying presence to the people of Israel. It is in that Ark, they kept the tablets of Ten Commandments. Until this day, the Ark of the Covenant was kept in a tent which is called Tabernacle in the old city of David throughout David’s region except for brief time period (2 Sam 15 24-29).
V.2… feast in the month of Ethanim…The dedication was temple was done during the FEAST OF TABERNACLES during which time Israelites were instructed to live in temporary tents as a reminder of their 40 journey in the wilderness. So, it was not hard for motivate people to come around the temple in Jerusalem.
V.8… to this day…This means from the time that actually happened until the day the book was written.
V.9… nothing was in the ark except the two tablets…Hebrew 9:4 says the ark had the two tablets, the rod of Aaron and the pot of manna. They were no longer there. May be they were lost or stolen in 1 Sam 6:19 incident or some other time.
V.10… Cloud…filled the house of the LORD… (2 Chro. 5:13-14)The cloud is said to be the symbol of the presence of God associating with the people of Israel. It appeared in Ex. 40:34-38 also. This is also seen as the presence of the 3rd person of Godhead, the Holy Spirit.
V.11… the priests could not continue ministering…The presence of the LORD was so powerful that the priests lost the strength and were incapacitated. This prefigures the coming of the presence of the Spirit of God in Christ during HIS baptism, and on the NT believers and ultimately on the Church.
The occasion. (12-21): Parallel…. 2 Chro. 6:1-12. Solomon explains people why the cloud filled the temple and why he had built the Temple for the LORD.
Vs. 12 & 13…The coming of God’s presence and the appearance of the cloud of God’s glory are signs that the temple and the worship arrangement has the blessing of the LORD.
V.17… Name of the LORD…This phrase is often used by Solomon.
